KineMed's Stable Isotope Approach
KineMed translational (TM) and personalized medicine (PM) platform measures key processes and pathways crucial to health, disease, and drug action in living animals and humans. Examples include:
- How rapidly various cells are growing, including cancer cells, nerve cells and fat cells
- How the body metabolizes cholesterol and other fats
- How the body handles sugars such as glucose
- How quickly new nerve cells appear in specific regions of the brain
KineMed technology also makes it possible to make these measurements in individuals before and after drug administration, allowing easier and more robust detection of drug-induced changes.
- Animals or patients are given a small amount of heavy water or other stable isotope-labeled tracer
- The heavy water or other tracer mixes evenly and rapidly into body pool
- All biomolecules made while the tracer is present are labeled as "new"
- The cell or biomolecule of interest is then isolated from blood, tissue, saliva or urine
- Labeling is measured via ultra-sensitive mass spectrometry and rates of synthesis or turnover are determined
